For sale is a beautiful, lidded Scottish Seaton pottery, Aberdeen Agateware storage barrel, decorated with a shield plaque to the front for 'Mrs Lyon' dated 1886.

Noted as among the most spectacular of all ceramic creations (*Ref Cruickshank, 2005)

- Attribute to Thomas Gavin and his son John of Seaton Pottery, Aberdeen, Scotland.

- A lidded storage barrel decorated with ringed turnings to the top and bottom and these agateware pieces were often decorated with personal names, messages and motoes and generally dated.

- Seaton pottery are noted as creating distinctive forms of the font of the capital letters and numerals especially eights.

- Personal names and messages were created (as here for 'Mrs Lyon', 1889) by a clay inlay technique for the lettering applied to the shield plaques to the front.

- Wedging together light and dark brown clay with white clay, and dividing the resultant lump into single balls before throwing, this produced a dramatic effect which sometimes resembled natural agate stone.
