For sale is a lovely light colour painted small Swedish 'folk art' bowl in great condition with a locking lid from circa 1820-50.
- The bowl is an attractive and decorative squat rounded shape like a small curling stone with highly curved edges.
- The bowl has been originally decorated in a classic Swedish light blue/grey/green paint which has a lovely patina. It has rectangular stub, worn handle for the twist lock lid in great condition and monogramed with an IXI mark carved into the stub handle by the original owner some 170+ years ago.
- The bowl has a deliberate small mark on the lid and main bowl to indicate when the locking mechanism is engaged.
- These lidded storage bowls were for food, butter, tobacco or in the smaller ones such as these they were used for snuff. These beautiful rural bowls often have locking lids. The locking mechanism is a simple pair of large and small tabs carved to the lid that slot under the track to the lip of the bowl and it rotates to lock/un-lock. Often as the wood has dried out over the decades and if someone forces it then they sometimes develop cracks close to the point that the lock in the lid engages, this one does not have this in contrast to many.
