Available from W&W Antiques is a very well made Scottish vernacular 'Brander' Iron from the late 18th or first half of the 19th Century.
- A blacksmith made, wrought iron gridiron of simple form with straight bars set through two end pieces with a sinuous shaped handle (the only decorative adornment) and end loop for hanging when not in use.
- These brander irons were used for simple domestic cooking directly over the embers of a fire. The brander would have been used for cooking meat, fish or oatcakes over the fire.
- The 'brander iron' also gives its name and distinctive linear shape to many of the simple Scottish vernacular brander-back chairs noted with the vertical back splat design being referred to as similar to the gridiron. W&W Antiques have in stock and have stocked many examples of brander-back armchairs and side chairs.
- In solid antique condition ready for use or ornament in a new home. *Scottish creepie or side table, not included in the sale item, for context and decorative purpose only.
