Late 18th Century Pair of Scottish vernacular brander back Wych Elm chairs c.1780-1820
- This design of these vernacular Scottish / provincial chairs is influenced by the elegant Georgian classical designs of Sheraton and others and they are likely from the lowlands of Scotland.
- They are both a beautiful light, warm and rich Wych Elm colour with leather covered drop in seats. Both the native Wych Elm and to a lesser extent, English Elm were used in Scottish furniture, with Wych Elm being of a lighter colour and smooth grained texture. The grain and simple decoration and construction make this pair a delightful vernacular pair.
- They have three vertical fan shaped 'brander' type back splats similar to other examples. The square tapering legs are united by a H-shaped stretcher.
- These chairs maintain a modest and delicate from but in a vernacular side chair, distinctive and elegant in style. Seat height = 49cm.- They are in good antique condition for c.225 years of age with some evidence of historic woodworm to the stretcher and legs, but nothing to detract from their utility as an elegant pair of side chairs for a hall, porch or a wide range of rooms providing a really pleasing design and simple vernacular balance/proportion.
