For sale is a large decorative spongeware footed bowl likely to be Scottish in origin c. 1890-1920.

- A naively attractive bowl from the late 19th Century, used for a range of foodstuffs from porridge, soup, potato and vegetables, bread & milk.
- The spongeware bowl has lived a life of utility and is decorated with a repeat red and green floral pattern around the rim and side of the bowl.  The floral print is bordered by two single green decorative lines. The bowl sits on a raised footing.
- Used in many working, rural homes across Scotland and the highlands, Ireland and exported across the Empire these footed bowls were naively and quickly painted by pieceworkers, sponging on the colours and patterns.
- The bowl as seen by the images has survived use with age-related wear, a hairline crack, glaze crazing with staining and knocks from 140 years+ of utility.

A beautiful and attractive primitive vessel.
