For sale is a beautifully designed set of thick antique Victorian floor tiles by W Godwin Lugwardine, Hereford.

- Six glazed encaustic tiles with a quatrefoil foliate design finished in a striking black, green and yellow central colour with cream and red border.
- Marks and wear consistent with the age of these floor tiles that have been architecturally reclaimed.

In 1852, William Godwin began creating gothic tiles by the encaustic process at his factory at Lugwardine in Herefordshire.

As a leading manufacturers in the nineteenth century, they supplied the demand for churches, railway stations, schools, municipal buildings and umpteen suburban villas. Inevitably. Godwin's encaustic tiles were made from the red clays. Gilbert Scott, the church-restoring architect, first used them in 1857 in Hereford Cathedral and by 1868 the Godwin Encaustic Tile Co stated that its tiles had been used in 300 churches, the Manchester Assizes and Birmingham Exchange. Clays from Broseley, Dorset, Wales and Cornish china clay were used for the white or coloured parts of the tile. Godwin died in 1883, and many of his technical secrets appeared to die with him.
