For sale is an attractive arts & crafts copper charger of good quality with central floral decoration and a life message around the circumference! Equally as applicable today, taken from a Robert Burns poem 'Tam o'shanter'

'But pleasures are like poppies spread you seize the flow'r its bloom is spread'......

- The 11" copper repoussé charger has two centrally located entwinned poppies with leaves and seed heads, similar to floral designs, pie-crust edging and motto font used by a range of the arts and crafts schools/guilds on pieces of artmetalware e.g. Fivemiletown, KSIA.

- The plate has a pie-crust edging inside which is the beautiful motto spreading around the plate.

- The style and font of the lettering used is attractive and the shortening of flower to flow'r often used in Northern and Scottish dialects in partciular in the UK.

- The charger has no makers marks and a small square punch has been used for the background stippling/decoration throughout with a considerable amount of work having gone into the background alone, as time was and remains money this will have taken some time to produce. The charger design has been attributed to the *Newton School of Metalwork, Cambridgeshire from c.1910. 

*Thanks is due to recent research undertaken around the Newton School of Metalwork, by www.hammerandhand.co.uk which has also identified attribution of the design and motif of this charger to the school based close to Cambridge, England from 1894. This research has highlighted some interesting elements including the influence of designs utilised by the school from both John Williams and Mary Williams at the school. Other elements of design used by Newton School of Metalwork show the influence of other schools and guilds of the period.

An attractive and decorative arts and crafts copper plate with a beautiful motto, which were prevalent on metalware, funriture and art during the movement. These mottos aligned with the social improvement element of the various artmeatlwork schools and guilds that developed in particular from the late 19th Century through to the First World War.
