For sale is an attractive British Arts & Crafts Movement / Art Nouveau designed pendant from Birmigham, 1909.

British jewellery excelled in the early 20th Century in the use of Arts & Crafts Movement design themes, like the simple use of naturalistic/organic floral, foliate and figural patterns. Metals such as silver were finely hammered to create designs with richly coloured decorative enamels applied into intricate and delicate designs. Artistic jewellery makers such as James Fenton and Charles Horner excelled in the production of enamelled pieces, while makers such as Murrle Bennett, Archibold Knox and Barnet Henry Joseph supplied commercial companies such as Liberty & Co with decorative commercial items which became fashionable across Europe in the design aesthetic of Arts & Crafts / Art Nouveau / Jugendstil.

This pendant is from Birmingham the heart of the British Jewellery industry from 1909, it is a disctinctive design and elegant with:

- A curved, simple Art Nouveau design aesthetic suspended from a Fleur de Lys bale/ loop to the top of the pendant.  The pendant then curves in a single piece of hand hammered silver inset with a facet cut blue paste/glass stone to a drop also with a matching blue cut paste/glass stone. The central stone is between three raised sections of the hand hammered silver, planished in a decorative manner utilised in the Arts & Crafts movement.

- The back of the pendant carries a hallmark noted for Birmingham silver, estimated from the lower letter K to 1909 and a makers mark of J.W. The mark appears on other silver items between 1901-1924 on silver bookmarks/frames and buttons, noted online but no specific maker is attributed. The drop is also markedt to the side with the lion passant indicating sterling silver.

- The chain is circa 18 inches in length, weighty with attractive links a standard roll-over clasp and is marked sterling and is of the same period.

The pendant is ready to be worn and remains a highly decorative and evocative of the Arts & Crafts Movement / Art Nouveau style.
